  • 10:00a – 12:00p EDT | Workshops

     Learn from experts across Florida as they take you on adventures through their fields by teaching you about a variety of skills and knowledge sets needed throughout your life.  

    • Wheeling & Dealing: Buying Your New Ride 
      • Presented by Beth Kerr, Katherine Allen, and Kim Griffin from UF/IFAS Extension – Hamilton and Suwannee 
      • Learn all about buying your first car. This workshop will take you through the process of researching and evaluating vehicle choices, price negotiation, and all the steps involved in making a wise vehicle purchase. In addition to the car buying experience, we will review possible careers associated with the automobile industry such as mechanic, salesman, detailer, loan officer, and insurance agent.
    • Discovering Cancer Mutations 
      • Presented by Rachel Newsome, Qin Yu, and Greg Takacs from the UF Health Cancer Center 
      • The University of Florida Health Cancer Center Discovery program will encompass cancer research from the gene level to the protein level and understand how scientists use bio-informatics tools in their research. Students will learn about oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, hot topics in cancer research, and different techniques used in cancer research. Participants will conduct a hands-on experiment to extract DNA. Experiment Supplies will be mailed to your home with the exception of one item… you will need a banana. 
    • Real Colors Session #1 
      • Presented by Heather Janney, Halie Corbitt, Niki Crawson, and Daniel Gonzalez from UF/IFAS Extension – Columbia, Walton, and Palm Beach
      • ****This workshop is a 2-part workshop offered in the morning and afternoon. If you select this workshop, be prepared to attend both sessions.
      • During these sessions you will discover your personal strengths, learn to recognize the strengths of others, learn to build instant rapport with people, learn the most effective methods of speaking to different people, learn to hear what others are really saying, discover the different ways individuals process information, learn to appreciate and value the viewpoints of others, and how to apply Real Colors Principles in all areas of your life. This is a fun, fast, and interactive program where you will get to learn your own temperament or “color” and that of others.

    • Exploring Veterinary Medicine 
      • Presented by Dr. Sally Anne DeNotta from UF College of Veterinary Medicine 
      • Come join us for an afternoon at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine! This interactive program will include information on the veterinary school requirements and admissions process, as well as virtual tours of the small and large animal hospitals. The remaining time will be split into learning about different areas of veterinary medicine.  
    • Smartin’ in the Environment Using Sensors 
      • Presented by Haimanote Bayabil, Eban Bean, Sandra Guzman, Young Gu Her, Sanjay Shukla, Vivek Sharma, and Ziwen Yu from UF/IFAS Agricultural and Biological Engineering 
      • This workshop introduces you to cutting edge technologies available for environmental water resource engineering such as sensors and data visualization techniques including: 1) The use of sensors to measure water quality and quantity for agricultural and natural resources management and 2) data presentation technologies for environmental data. See how we use this technology to gather data and how we use the data to make decisions to develop a smart and sustained environment.
