4-H Horticulture ID and Judging

Horticulture is the art and science of growing fruits and nuts, vegetables, flowers and foliage plants and ornamental plants. Horticulture is a profession, a vocation, a hobby, an industry, and a way of life for millions of people. Horticulture is very important to Florida's economy and is vital to everyone's health and well-being.

Contest Registration closes on October 11th and registration is through 4-H Online.

Youth who take part in the 4-H horticulture project can:

  • Learn to plan, care for, and manage vegetable and/or flower gardens, lawns, or commercial horticultural crops.
  • Learn about pest management.
  • Learn basic facts about plants and soils.
  • Apply knowledge by experimenting with plants in a laboratory or in the field.
  • Learn about landscaping and water gardens

2021 State Horticulture ID and Judging Contest 

Date: October 23, 2021 (rescheduled from 8/28/2021)

Location: University of Florida - East Campus, 2046 NE Waldo Rd, Gainesville, FL 32609 (Same as before)

Check in: 9:00am

Contest Orientation: 9:45am

Contest Begins: 10:00am. Contest should last around 2 hours

  • Youth contest participants will need to bring the following items: 
    • Clip board
    • Pencils
    • Smile
  • Family members attending the event may want to bring:
    • Lawn chair-If you want to sit outside the building.
    • Snacks-There are a few restaurants nearby for lunch options.
    • Water
    • Camera- You are welcome to take photos of the plant specimens after the contest.

All people, over the age of 2, inside of UF facilities are expected to wear masks in community spaces in buildings, including common areas in office suites, even if you are vaccinated.
