Carolina Chickadee*

The famous naturalist John James Audubon named this acrobatic and gregarious songbird for its "chickadee-dee-dee" call. They eat mostly insects in the summer, and seeds and berries in the winter.
In cold weather, the Carolina Chickadee can go into a temporary state of hibernation, called tupor. To conserve energy, they'll hide in a tree cavity and lower their body temperature for up to 18 hours.
