Introduction
Breeding rabbits is a serious business! You need to prepare each of the rabbits prior to breeding, as well as make sure that you have all of the necessary equipment, space, materials, supplies and time to dedicate to the rabbits that will result from the breeding.

If you are breeding to supply for a market, make sure that there is a demand prior to breeding your rabbits. You should consider:

  • What will you do if you cannot sell your product?
  • Will you be able to support the new litter of rabbits?

You must ask yourself these and other questions BEFORE breeding your rabbits. Rabbits are very proliferous animals and can have many kits. This is an important consideration to keep in mind before trying to breed all of your does at the same time.

Solve this Situation

Scenario
Jamie and Alexis entered a few of their rabbits in a county rabbit show. It was a cooped show, meaning that their rabbits would stay on the fairgrounds for a few days. A few days into the show Jamie receives a call from the show superintendent - one of the rabbits they entered, Butterscotch, had been disqualified from the show because she gave birth to a litter of kits.

The show superintendent told Jamie to immediately pick up the doe and take her home. Jamie thought, "That's impossible!" Jamie was sure that the doe had not been bred, but Jamie checked the doe’s breeding records to be sure. When checked, the records also showed that the doe had not been breed. Jamie called Alexis and explained the situation. Alexis then remembered having bred the doe, but admitted to forgetting to write down the event in the breeding records.
