Fireblight: Identifying Characteristics
Identifying the injury:
Blackened shoots, flowers and fruits; larger cankers on older stems.
Identifying the fungus:
Bacterial "ooze" is sometimes seen on recently infected fruits and flowers – rarely stems.
Susceptible trees:
Trees in the rose family (Rosaceae) – pears, apples, crabapples, hawthorne etc.
