Words of the Day
- Allantois: an organ in the embryo of birds that develops into part of the umbilical cord and unites with the chorion, forming the placenta. Responsible for respiration, absorption of minerals from the shell and handling waste.
- Amnion: a membranous, fluid-filled sac surrounding the embryo. Important for protection, it allows the embryo to exercise during development.
- Egg Shell: the egg’s outer covering consisting mainly of calcium carbonate. The shell is the egg’s first line of defense against bacterial contamination.
- Embryo: a fertilized egg at any stage of development prior to hatching.
