TIMPOOCHEE CAMPSITE MAP

Environmental Education and Marine Science Programs

4-H Camp Timpoochee’s environmental education programs focus on their backyard - the BAY! Camp Timpoochee is fortunate to be located on the Choctawhatchee Bay and their programs and classes center around teaching marine ecology. Our curriculum allows for students to engage in experiential learning in an outdoor setting, here at Camp Timpoochee. All programs align with state and national science and education standards, allowing youth to learn in an informal environment. Students will learn about various environmental and outdoor based topics, based upon each visiting group’s goals and objectives. Please learn more about the programs we currently offer and check back often to see new programs currently being developed!

MARINE LAB:

Since Camp Timpoochee is located on the Choctawhatchee Bay, we can bring a hands-on learning Marine Lab to our Environmental Education experiences. Our Marine Lab contains saltwater tanks that house local marine life. These education animals allow us to educate students on the various species and the habitats they survive in. Students will get an up-close look at marine species and will get to learn about the marine ecosystems in a unique and experiential way.

CLASSES OFFERED

  • Marine Megafauna

Join us to take an in-depth look at the largest animals of the sea, mammals, sharks, and reptiles! Students will be able to identify adaptations in each group & highlight how important each group is for the ocean.

  • Dissecting Ocean Life

Through two comparative dissections, students will get to experience firsthand the value of investigating organisms through dissection. Students will observe and discuss the differences in adaptations between marine vertebrate and invertebrates.

  • Plankton Matters

Students will learn how to identify plankton species and classify them into four major categories. If experienced at Camp, students will collect their own plankton samples from the Choctawhatchee Bay!

  • Water Quality Lab

The health of our water is critical for all life. Using scientific inquiry and equipment, students will work together to gather and interpret data from three local sources: freshwater, saltwater, and brackish water!

  • Oceans, Hurricanes, & You!

The strongest storms on Earth are hurricanes! We will explore the huge role the ocean plays in their formation, and through historical data, we will compare the impact several famous hurricanes had on the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Challenge Your Team

Effective teamwork is sometimes easier said than done, but it is such an important skill. Teams will be challenged in field games and low ropes elements and will be required to work together to accomplish various goals. While challenges may be difficult, groups are encouraged to work together and have some fun while doing so.

BOOKING AND PROGRAM INFO

  • How to Book a Program

Camp Timpoochee Environmental Education classes are offered to any group interested in learning more about the local marine ecosystem! While we welcome adult groups, our curricula primarily serve youth in grades K-12, as we work primarily with homeschool coops/organizations and public and private schools. We offer on-site programming for just a day or overnight programs as well. If traveling to camp isn’t an option, we also offer outreach programs that are typically 45-minutes long but can be tailored to your group’s time constraints.
